Alternative to the hostsfile

The GekkoFS hostsfile limits the file system to sites that use a strongly consistent parallel file system. The obvious disadvantage is that, if such a file system isn't used, GekkoFS cannot run. Further, this can result in prolonged startup times for both daemons and clients when the need to access the hostsfile.

In this issue, an alternative approach should be offered.
